Final Packing and Good Byes

By Thursday, October 12, all of the stuff was out of the house, except for a cat odor in the laundry room in the basement. I was at the house all day Thursday as the items left the house (carried by the movers), one by one. By the end of the day, I was sitting in my empty dining room in a daze, with the lines from the song “Old Apartment” by Barenaked Ladies which say, “This is where we used to live.” Literally, I was singing that line over and over in my mind. It was a strange feeling to see the house empty and it made me realize that we have never seen that house empty since we moved into it from our last excursion in Mexico. Andy’s sister, Chrissy, who was renting the house when we bought it (remotely), had moved a good portion of our stuff into the house already, bless her heart, so it had our furniture when we moved in.

Really the last week in Boise was a big blur. When I think back, it is like one of those movies where they try and convey an entire sequence of events in ten or so brief flashes on the screen: lunch with my work team at the new Mai Thai; dinners at all of our favorite restaurants; as much Thomas Hammer coffee as possible per day; a little bit of work; runs with my running buddies; one night of teaser cookies at the Residence Inn (they said they offered them every night and so every night I went back in and they had not made them); drinks for Lindsay T.’s birthday; lunch with Lindsay B.; a new sumo for Anna; BBQ at Anna and Derik’s; awesome new songs from Sara; good bye phone calls and visits; an entire morning at the bank getting the correct accounts set up; inquiries as to how and the hell to get the cat smell out of the basement; carpet cleaners; going away party; Derik’s amazing steaks; cupcakes and chocolate swirl cookies; Ray’s 60th birthday party; an amazing quilt with good bye messages whipped up by my mom; one last visit with Sassy to throw her stick and say good bye; laundry with Dad; Eileen telling me about the RED campaign; team photo from Kristin and company; one last chat with Scott and finally the good byes at the airport which are always a killer.

At the airport, the United Airlines guy at the check out counter was a jerk (I really want to use a different word, but will keep this PG) and not only charged us for the four big bags being over-height and over-weight, but did so with a frown, almost scolding us the entire time. I am not sure what would have made him happy. Maybe if we rolled on the ground crying saying we were sorry? Who knows, he was a very unpleasant man. Luckily we had, our very upbeat family with us to not allow him to get to me too much.

After all was said and done, we boarded the plane with four huge bags, one normal sized bag, the iMAC computer and two carry-ons. After months of preparation, we were finally leaving on a jet plane..
