That evening we anchored at an uninhabited island called Koh Roi. All of us were anxious to jump into the water and cool off. There was only one other boat anchored in next to us. It was flying an American flag so I decided to swim over and say “hello”. The man who owned the boat had retired five years ago and sailed his boat all the way from Florida. He was joined by a younger couple from Michigan. Although I never got into the details I think one of the couple was his son/daughter and the other was the daughter/son in-law.
The day was a lot of fun. I have always dreamed of seeing a real yacht race in person. Even though it was not the Americas Cup, it was very exciting. We were watching the race from the committee boat, which was actually a Chinese fishing boat that the organizers rented out for the day. The one mistake I made was not to bring any food or water with me on board. Luckily the other GAW’s brought some KFC. Alecia came up to me after eating a chicken sandwich, and told me “Well, I figured it was either you or me for the chicken sandwich, and I figured you would have wanted me to eat it.”
In our brief encounter with Hong Kong we decided it is the best of China with British manners. Being that the manners are the majority of the things that grind on our nerves living here, Hong Kong was a huge breath of fresh air…but not literally because the pollution was bad there as well.
