My Little Sister is Legally Hitched

annaderikcourthouse

At lunch today, I received a text message from Anna, my sister, saying, “We are getting married at 3 pm at the Ada County Courthouse, fifth floor, room 501 by Judge Hansen…if you are interested in going meet us at the lobby at 2:50…please let us know either way so we know who to expect…no pressure, we just wanted to let you all know.”  When I got back to my desk after lunch, I rescheduled three meetings I had scheduled for the afternoon and responded to Anna’s text message with, “I will be there.”  Talk about informal wedding planning.

Andy could not get out of his afternoon meetings so I drove down to the Ada County Courthouse by myself while on the phone with my mom who was also on her way to the courthouse.  I arrived slightly after 2:50 and met Anna, Derik, my mom and Derik’s friend/business partner Dave in the lobby.  We took the elevator up to the fifth floor and Anna dialed a phone to let them know that we were there.  A few minutes later, a door opened and a woman led us through a corridor to the back entrance to a courtroom.

When asked, my mom and I volunteered to be witnesses and then the woman, Anna and Derik disappeared for awhile leaving Dave, my mom and I to discuss our disbelief that they were finally getting married.  Less than ten minutes later, they returned to the room with a judge who they had just discussed the script to their legal wedding.  Just as the judge was about to get started on the wedding ceremony, my phone started vibrating and I knew by the “Blocked” caller that it was my dad.  He was in the courtroom next door looking for us.  Luckily the judge was patient enough to wait the three minutes it took him to find the right room.  With cameras in hand, my mom, dad, Dave and I watched as Derik and Anna listened to their legal wedding vows and repeated after Judge Hansen.  Before we knew it, Derik was kissing his bride and we were all exclaiming our excitement and congratulations.  Who knew a wedding could be so quick, easy and no-nonsense.

After the wedding, we went to the Cottonwood Grille for a drink where Andy later met up with us.  Following that, we had a nice dinner at the Lock Stock & Barrel.

Even though Anna and Derik are not treating this as their real wedding day, it was still really exciting and it is crazy to think that my little sister is now legally married!  Horray!  To them, their “real” wedding will be February 7th on the beach in Fiji, which we cannot wait for either!
