I am starting this blog entry at 3:39 AM after waking up at 3 AM hungry, eating a bowl of raisin bran with bananas, going back to bed, not falling asleep and now getting up again to do something at least semi-productive. So far in the pregnancy, I have not had a lot of problem sleeping, so I am hoping this is an anomaly because I do love my sleep and recognize that it will be hampered significantly when the wee babe arrives.

In all honesty, there is nothing too exciting to report. I continue to grow…we are a week closer to having the baby, we continue to be excited. Andy’s birthday is today so last night we had his parents and sister Erin as well as my parents, sister and Derik over for cookies and ice cream. Andy typically prefers low-key birthdays so that is what he had. At one point during the reserved festivities, I looked around the room and felt so incredibly fortunate as our families are really close and get along so well and it is a true joy to get everyone together. I do not think that is the case for many parent/in-law relationships and we do feel truly fortunate. It is also so cool how excited for the baby everyone is. You can definitely feel the excitement in the air by the future grandparents and aunties and uncles. We proudly showed everyone the closet which has been updated with super cute outfits that have been recently washed and put on wee hangers.

Andy’s other birthday wish was to host a UFC Fight night at our house (watching on TV, not hosting live). On Saturday, he ordered the fight on pay-per-view, cooked up some lil’ smokies and brats and had a few fight-loving friends over. It turned out to be a good night of fighting which was capped off by a special treat of our favorite tequila (Jose Cuervo Familia Reserva) which he shared with a couple of the guys before everyone went home. He is vowing to save the rest of the bottle until I can drink again but that really isn’t necessary. He said last night that he would crack it open again on our first date night after the baby. That seems like an awful long time away, but I suppose time will be a blur between now and then. It really is crazy how little I do miss even my favorite alcoholic drinks. I mean don’t get me wrong, I miss drinking socially, I miss red wine and I would have loved a glass of the tequila the other night, but I really thought I would miss alcohol more than I do.

I guess a few more things happened last week than I originally remembered. We had dinner one night with Erin & Chris at Harry’s in Hyde Park and I believe another time earlier in the week with Anna & Derik. Thursday night we went down to the newly remodeled Eighth Street Marketplace where Derik’s new company’s office is. It was “First Thursday” in downtown Boise so there were a lot of festivities. We didn’t go around to all of the shops that were open late, as my energy level in the evenings is not high. We mostly just hung out at their office with a few other people but did step over to the art gallery across the hall where a “poetry reading under dirt” occurred. It was a bit too out there for me…some guy reading poetry on a bed with his body covered in dirt. I am not really that into poetry nor performing art at least in that sense, so I didn’t stay long.

Andy has been continuing to practice with his camera. This weekend he got up early in subfreezing weather and took photos in the Boise foothills before sunset. He was freezing when he came home a couple of hours later. He also captured some neat shots of Derik’s office and the Eighth Street Marketplace during First Thursday. Sunday, he spent all day working on Anna and Derik’s wedding video only to find out that the program he is creating it in cannot render all of the data. He is afraid he is back to square one today, but hopefully he can salvage at least some of what he has done.

I went on two wonderful walks again this weekend. Saturday, my mom and I walked Bucks Trail in the military reserve foothills. It ended up taking us almost two hours due to the muddy trails. Then Sunday, both of my parents, their dog Bo and I walked up Hulls Gulch to the creek crossing and then back. Both mornings were absolutely beautiful. I really hope I can continue to walk through the pregnancy. The same random guy at the YMCA who has commented that I “look really good and have really healthy hair” over the past few months came up to me while I was on the weight machines on Friday. He said, “you still look really good, but I have to wonder, are you getting enough rest…I know it is none of my business, but, well, are you? It always amazes me when I see pregnant women working out.” It is funny to hear different people’s impressions of pregnancy, especially men’s.

Last night in bed, Andy and I were discussing whether knowledge of the length of the gestation period is intrinsic to humans and animals. For example, does the mama lion know that for 14 weeks she can continue to hunt wildebeests but then on that 15th week, she better stay home because she is close to delivering her cubs? It is hard to separate ourselves from the knowledge we have learned so it is hard to say if I will intrinsically know when it is time to have the baby, before the labor contractions actually stop. Based on observing others, my guess is yes, but it will be interesting to see. As big as I feel right now, I do think that I know that it is not yet time to give birth. I am guessing this will change in the next eight weeks.

According to one of the baby websites I read, since I am now 32 weeks along, the baby is getting close to four pounds and 17 inches long.

The baby now has developed sensitivity to temperature and most likely has some hair. The coolest news for the week is that 90% of babies delivered at 32 weeks survive…so we are getting close to the home stretch.

Too Much Information

Remember, this is the section you should not read if you do not want to know the gross parts of pregnancy….

As if there were not enough things to worry about during labor, there is this one other precious detail that I have been reading about lately. I will take the description out of my weekly pregnancy calendar email from babygaga.com .

If your family or significant other is around and involved, it’s probably time to start discussing what’s going to happen when you really go into labor. Of course, the delivery itself can be quite overwhelming for first-time viewers, so make sure and openly discuss the fact there will be blood, sweat, mucous, and possibly even a bit of poop (if you didn’t know already, it’s likely that while in labor and pushing, you also push out a bit of the ol’ number 2—it’s totally normal if not a little disgusting).

Um, ya…that is all I have to say about that. Now, back to bed..
