What was once a youthful home and exuberance and energy today feels like an old folks home. My mom and I went for a long walk in the Boise foothills this morning on a great trail called Corrals. We walked about an hour and a half and after with twenty minutes left to return to the trailhead, I realized I had probably gone further than I needed to. That pressure pushing down on the ligaments in my pelvis feeling was back stronger than when I used to run. The baby/belly is now quite large and combined with the force of gravity, it can do some damage.
I reluctantly took Sassy, our dog, on the walk with us as well. I say reluctantly because she has really bad osteoarthritis and limps around even without doing exercise. A small amount of exercise is good for her as it loosens things up a bit, but she really shouldn’t go longer than 30 minutes. The hard part is that she has an incredible pain tolerance coupled with an over-the-top excitement about the foothills so I decided to bring her this morning. My mom helped me with the other reason why I often cannot bring her…after the walk she cannot jump in the car and she is too heavy for me to lift in my current state. I don’t think my mom knew how muddy she would get when she signed up for that task.
Anyway, so we had a wonderful walk on an absolutely beautiful day. On the way home, we stopped at the local Java drive-thru and I introduced my mom to cappuccinos which she really liked. It was great.
Later when we returned to my house, mom mom watched the Fiji wedding video and also evaluated the lining for the curtains she is making for Belén’s room and asked our opinions. The curtains will really be the final touch to the nursery except for the wall hangings I just pressed the “Order Now” button on Babies R Us. As I type this, Andy is picking up the stroller, exchanging the swing and taking back a few duplicate items to Babies R Us and we are more-or-less ready from a must-have stuff perspective until we figure out more things we need (most likely after the baby comes.)
Anyway, so as I was making sandwiches for lunch, I looked down and saw Ozzy (the cat) sitting in the kitchen favoring his right front paw. We are now wondering if he might have arthritis too. I looked out in the backyard and Sassy got up from her bed where she was licking/nursing the arthritis knobs in her front legs and then with great difficulty got up and limped around the yard to bark at a squirrel. Moments later, I noticed as I got up from a chair with difficulty to heave myself to the bathroom. Getting up from a chair causes a lot of pressure. Once I get walking, I am fine, but those first couple of steps, I look disabled. I have even taken to getting in the car in the “old people” way where you keep both feet outside of the car and sit down perpendicular to the back of the seat. Then, slowly bring one leg and then the other into the car. My doula actually suggested this as the relaxin hormone in my body at this late stage of pregnancy can cause you to easily hurt yourself.
So, with the exception of Andy, our household is really quite pathetic (Andy ran 14 miles in the hills this morning so even though he is limping mostly from chafe, he has a very active excuse for it.)
On top of it all, I had ordered an exercise ball about two weeks ago with plans to use as a birthing ball. It stinks SO bad, like cheaply-made Chinese manufactured product doubling as the same smell as an old folks home. The old folks home smell has lingered in our home even though the ball has been exiled to the back porch. All together, we are operating like a regular old folks home here in the Hoobing household. Metamucil and prunes anyone?
