Okay I know unbliss is not a word, but I am tired of the word fussy. I wanted to write about the last 24 hours because I think it is important to write about the challenging along with the good. Starting yesterday Belén’s personality did a 160 (almost 180) degree turn and she suddenly became unhappy the majority of the time. She cried a lot and my usual tricks of swaddling, jiggling, rocking, singing, etc. didn’t work. She even fussed while she ate. When I picked her up and put her against my chest (her favorite position) she would often calm a bit which made us start to wonder if she is getting mature enough to be able to manipulate us. Last night, she finally slept but was up with Andy for two hours. Through both the day and night she fed every 1.5 – 2 hours when she typically feeds every 3.5 hours at night. We awoke exhausted this morning.
Fussy Belén
When things continued in a similar fashion today, I called the doctor just to ask them for an opinion. The nurse who called me back basically said that it could be colic, reflux or a growth spurt. After spending another day with her, my working theory is that it is mild to moderate reflux coupled with a growth spurt. She is eating a greater quantity and more often which is causing my milk production to increase. If you combine that with the possibility that she has some reflux which causes her to fuss during and after feedings then that means that she is fussing 50-75% of the time which is what happened yesterday and last night.
So today, what I have tried to do (as suggested by a baby website) is to keep her sitting up while she eats meanwhile burping her often. Then, I keep her vertical for 20 minutes after feeding her. I am not sure if my actions are working completely but she definitely seems more calm than yesterday at this time. My mom’s friend has also suggested eliminating dairy from my diet which I might try as well. I honestly don’t have enough non-dairy food in the house to sustain me so I will probably have to make a trip to the store before I start that. I swear all I eat is yogurt, milk, pudding, cottage cheese and cheese. Oh shoot, I just realized cappuccinos have milk. Hmmm.
Tomorrow is my six-week checkup. Wish me luck. Hopefully I can start running again!
