After the breakdown and sheer exhaustion of Tuesday, it was very timely that I had set up a port tasting night with Erin (my sister in-law) and a couple of her friends on Wednesday night. We had been eating dinner over at Ray and Eileen’s a few weeks back when Erin’s friend, Kristi and I somehow got on the topic of port. I had recently bought two bottles since I was finally able to occasionally drink after so many months of abstinence. It turns out that Kristi gets a bottle of port from her dad every year on her birthday and she loves it too. Andy was not partaking in helping me drink the bottles of port so Kristi volunteered to help me and it turned into an idea for a port tasting night.

Earlier in the day on Wednesday, I went to the Co-op to get one more bottle of port and also to buy some of my favorite dark chocolate since I thought it would be good with the port. The wine sommelier suggested I buy a chocolate port (bottle on the right in the picture above). I was skeptical but there was not a large selection and I already had a tawny and a Graham’s so I decided to go with it.

Kristi, Jen and Erin came over around 7PM. They brought some cheese, grapes, bread, hummus that along with my blueberries and chocolate tasted divine with the port. All four ports (they brought a local port as well) were quite delicious and unique tasting. It was fun to be able to compare and contrast the four and talk about them.

Port has a higher alcohol content than wine so even though I was taking very small tastes and didn’t feel my alcohol too much at the end of the evening, I decided to “pump and dump” for the first time. Basically I pumped out all of my milk and dumped it down the sink. I then proceeded to drink about six glasses of water so I didn’t feel like crap the next day since my body sucks so much of my fluids for the breast milk. It was a good way to get over the drama from the day before.
