Sailing Lingo

Someone tweeted this yesterday and I LOVE it because it so captures the terminology that I use on the sailboat.

part-of-boat

Luckily Andy is a very patient man and does not get mad that I still don’t know the real sailing names of these things. To be fair, I have learned the true names of all of the items on this drawing, but there are still a lot I don’t know… I will test myself and see if Andy comments, which will tell me a) if I was correct and b) if Andy reads “our” blog. :)

Flag – does it have another name?
Big Pole = mast
Small Sail = jib
Pointy End = bow
Parking Hook = anchor
Brake = center board or keel
Back End = stern
Pole that holds the sail up = boom
Big Sail = main sail
Thingys = battens
Steering Stick = attached to rudder (not sure of the name of the stick)

How did I do? I do prefer the other names. I would love to see the faces of the guys on the sailing club back in Shanghai if I used those names when sailing. They are SO serious I would probably get kicked out of the boat.
