Spoiler Alert for anyone who hasn’t read the final book in the Twilight series. If you plan to read the book and don’t want to know what happens, skip the first half of this post as I will give away a big part of the book.
I read that series last fall when I was pregnant and while I didn’t really think it was that good, I couldn’t not finish the series. In the final book, Bella and Edward get married and have a baby (gasp!) Much of the book was spent trying to figure out if the little baby, Renesmee (mixture of Bella’s mom’s name, Renée and Edward’s fake vampire mom’s name, Esme…a horrible name for a child, if you ask me, but whatever, maybe people say that about our choice of names) was going to be human or vampire.
The only reason I bring this up is because my child is acting like a vampire baby. No, she does not grow extraordinarily fast. She does grow quickly, but not the speed of Renesmee. Nor is she wicked strong or have the ability to show visions to people. None of those exciting special powers. The reason I started calling her Renesmee today is because she KEEPS BITING ME! The minute she loses interest in eating or if a particular breast runs out of milk, she just chomps down. I guess I could call her chompers like our favorite fish from the Maldives.
Chompers, our neighborhood parrot fish (Maldives)
My poor right nipple is wounded and scared and pleading with me to keep the baby away. I am going through more Lansinoh now than I ever have, by a long shot! I had been wanting to try and breastfeed through Belén’s first year, but this recent development is making me reconsider.
The nemesis of my right nipple...doesn't she look fierce?
I do want to stick with breastfeeding. And I have read that the biting can be because they are teething and their gums are sore. But seriously, one can only take so much. It doesn’t help that a lot of working mom friends who I really respect all stopped breastfeeding around six months, so I feel, like hey, this is probably good enough. Then I think of the positives that accompany continuing to breastfeed: antibodies for the kiddo (especially in this time of nasty flus everywhere), calorie burn for mom, money savings for the household… Those are some pretty compelling reasons. Not to mention that it really is easy and convenient when we are together. Pumping is a pretty big drag and my energy often feels zapped…but, what are you going to do?
Ahhhh, I go back and forth. And honestly at this point, I am still all for continuing with breastfeeding for the full year. But, these thoughts are dancing in my mind.
Andy is supportive either way. He likes the money savings of breastfeeding but he did come home from Costco this morning and tell me about a more inexpensive Costco brand of formula that we should ask the doctor about at her six-month checkup. He is looking forward to being more active in the feeding process, but he will get to do that starting this next week as we are going to introduce solids.
Belén's first trip to Williams & Sonoma
In preparation for this event, Belén, my mom and I went to Mecca Williams & Sonoma yesterday (I don’t even spend that much time in the kitchen and the store still feels close to heaven) and I purchased the full Beaba BabyCook getup including the baby food processor, freezer trays, spoons and cookbook. I did a lot of research on which baby food processor to buy and you will see from this video, why I ended up choosing this one.
We have virtually no idea how to introduce Belén to solids and we are probably not the only ones in this camp, so I decided that I might as well document our experiences and potentially help other novices. So, I am going to write extensively about the process (and hopefully make a few pennies if I find some readers willing to click on the ads and buy something from amazon through my link) at www.babyfoodprocessor.org I will also put less detailed updating in our blog as well.

we wait to start solids until the babe in question starts reaching for food and seems aware and interested in what we have on our plates. that seems as good of an indicator as any. it will be fun reading about belén’s adventures in solid food. it’s a messy endeavor, that’s for sure!
