When we first had Belén, I think we took 50 pictures of her a day.  Of course, this tapered off quickly but we still try and get some good shots of her doing whatever it is she is doing.  Andy is sort of a self-taught photographer and he has taken a few classes here and there.  I know nothing about photography except to recognize a good picture when I see one.  I am starting to believe there are numerous reasons why I should invest some of my time into becoming a better photographer.

For one, we have a lifetime of photos to take of Belén and theoretical child number two.  For another, we love to travel which compounds the need for good photos.  Thirdly, I am investing more and more time and effort into this blog and what I have found in all of the other blogs I read is some pretty amazing photography.  So, lets call it day zero of Alecia learning how to be a better photographer.  I took these photos of Belén eating yesterday.  My lesson of the day (from Andy) was how to adjust the flash to get the desired amount of light.

Today I took the principles I learned yesterday and applied them to a mini-photo shoot of Belén in her bouncer (which she adores and really gets bouncing in) while Andy was at work (I know, lame on a Sunday, right?)

Men and women alike all know that it is no fun to learn “how to” material from their significant other.  I really believe I am open to his suggestions from Andy but sometimes it is good to learn from a variety of people because perhaps other people’s suggestions may resonate more with your learning style or just provide a different set of input.

What I am getting at is that if you see any photos posted on this blog that you believe you could offer suggestions about making them better, I would love it if you posted a comment saying so and how you would improve them.  I am sure Andy would appreciate this for photos he takes as well.  I should mention that I am just figuring how to work his camera and have not even begun to think about PhotoShop, so that gives you some idea of my level.  I hope to go there soon and would love tips about Photo Shop as well.

This is a good post to mention that Andy took some wonderful senior photos of his cousin, Taryn.  I have been asking him to ask her if we can post some of them, but I don’t think he has yet, so hopefully I can share them soon if she agrees.

Finally, since we are on the topic of photos, I would like to announce that the photo pages of this blog are operational again.  I don’t like them quite as well as I did on iWeb, but they will work.  I have moved lower resolution versions of all of the photos over but have not added captions.  With my current WordPress photo plug-in, you don’t even see the caption unless you push on the “i” button which I doubt anyone would go to the time to do, so I am not going to bother at the moment.  I will focus my time on continuing to bring over the old blogs post.  I still have about 130 entries to bring over.  I cannot tell you how tempted I have been to figure out a way to outsource this.   Anyone have a teenager who needs to make a little money? :)  Once I get these done, I am planning to do this blogs first giveaway….I am excited!

Check out the Photos tab.  There are a bunch of photos embedded under “Travel”.  Make sure to select the location which will link to the page with the albums from that part of the world.  These pages are probably mostly for us as we feel like reminiscing about the wonderful trips we have been on, but hopefully you can have some fun with them as well.

Good Job! The flash looks great and isn’t overbearing. The white balance looks great on them too.

If you have a big south-facing window in your house, use that as your base light and augment with a little fill and/or bounce flash if needed. I always had a wonderful time with Nicolas while Lisa slept in, and usually got some memorable shots with just natural light. It is much harder now with Amelia, because Nicolas gets up and wants to be in the picture.

I love your shot of the happy eater! I wish I could see it larger.

The basic generic advice will give you:
    – get close
    – shoot from their level
    – find natural light when you can
    – get interactions between baby and mom/dad and/or environment — some of my favorite shots are of peekaboo, or someone peeking at someone else. Note that once peekaboo gets fun, even toys can peek over the edge of a chair :)
