Since July 1993, the back page of Vanity Fair has been devoted to the Proust Questionnaire, in which a noteworthy person answers a series of personal questions. The questionnaire has its origins in a parlor game popularized (though not devised) by Marcel Proust (1871–1922), the French essayist and novelist, who believed that, in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature. Below are my answers.
What is your idea of perfect happiness? A peaceful world where I spend each day with my loved ones.
What is your greatest fear? Outliving my child.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? The expectation I should be good at everything
What is the trait you most deplore in others? Intolerance
On what occasion do you lie? When I don’t believe the rules are appropriate and I need to get around them
What is your greatest extravagance? My jewelry collection
What is your current state of mind? Mostly Content
What is the quality you most like in a man? Integrity
What is the quality you most like in a woman? Confidence
Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Perhaps
When and where were you happiest? Every moment I spend with my husband and daughter
Who are your favorite writers? Wallace Stegnar, Somerset Maugham, George R. R. Martin, John Steinbeck
Which talent would you most like to have? Eloquent speaker
If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be? That we listened to each other more than we interrupted each other
If you died and came back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? A bird that soars above canyons
What do you dislike most about your appearance? My waist
Where would you like to live? Near the ocean in a small town full of interesting people and my closest friends and family
What is your most treasured possession? My wedding ring
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? Ignorance
What do you most value in your friends? Honest conversation
What are your favorite names? Belén, Isabel, Andrew, Sage, Anna, Henry, Simona, Ellie and a couple of names we are saving for Baby #2
What is it that you most dislike? Cruelty
What is your greatest regret? Being rude to my mom during my teenage years
How would you like to die? Of old age before I lose my marbles
