The changes we are witnessing around this place are astounding. There is honestly nothing I could do as an adult to change my life as dramatically as the changes that Belén is going through right now. Okay, so there are probably a few things but I would have to really fly off the handle and do something nuts.
Imagine going from having solely gums to getting teeth. It seems sort of blasé since we watch babies go through this all of the time, but seriously this is a huge, life-changing thing! Belén’s left bottom tooth is ready to pop out at any moment.
At the same time think about the transition from being someone who can sit and perhaps roll with a purpose to someone who crawls around to achieve goals of their own such as procuring a remote control to put in their oral orifice. These are big deals, folks.
Here is a video taken by Andy this morning of Belén working on her crawling skills…she is getting closer.
Finally, her communication skills are dramatically changing. She has found a new version of her voice that has changed from a sort of squeal or scream to having speach-like qualities. We often hear a “mamamamamamamamamamamdadadadadadadadgegegegege” coming from the baby monitor in the morning.
A quick, but related side note I want to point out is that the Chinese really nailed it when the came up for the names of family members.
Mom = ma ma
Dad = ba ba
Older Brother = ge ge (sounds like “guh guh”)
Younger Brother = di di (dee dee)
Older Sister =jie jie (jeeay jeeay)
Younger Sister = mei mei (may may)
Grandmother = nai nai (nie nie)
Grandfather = ye ye (yeh yeh)
We have heard nearly all of these sounds from Belén by now, so it really makes sense to use them in the first words babies might want to say.
All of these changes are exhausting for both Belén and her parents. It is no wonder that when I came downstairs to see why it was so quiet, I found this scene.
It really feels like Belén is changing from a baby to the beginnings of little kid. Literally last weekend, all she wanted was mommy and within the course of the week, she seems most interested in toys or other interesting new things. The kid is changing, that is fo sho.
