Have you read War and Peace?

I am thinking I need a reading project in 2010.  I adore classics as I seemed to miss a majority of them in high school for some strange reason.  I don’t believe I have read any of the Russian authors which ever since reading The Namesake years ago, I have been meaning to.  And how cool would it be to read a book by an author whose real name is Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy?  Okay, really that doesn’t matter, but it is acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest works of fiction.

It looks daunting (1386 pages in my copy) so I think I need to recruit others to read it with me.  Here is a thought.  What about if we take up War and Peace as a book club-type book for 2010?  The Oprah Show will be going away soon so we need to figure out a replacement for her book club anyway, right?

In monthly installments, that breaks the book down into approximately 120 pages a month, max.  Each month, I could write a post on the goal for the month and then those taking part in the reading can post their thoughts on that section of the book in the form of a comment.  It would be the interaction of a book club in the comfort of your own home…and if you get behind, no problem, your comments will just be a little later in the year.  If people breeze through the book, I can set up forums for the entire book too earlier in the year as well.  We can play it by ear.

Is anyone interested?  I am even willing to buy your book if the $8.76 plus shipping is what is holding you back.

This reminds me of proposing a race to my running friends.  ”I want to do something crazy…who’s in?”  It will be fun………

If I can get at least five takers, I will call it a plan. But of course, the more the better.
No pressure… :)

I somehow missed a majority of the classics too (is it because there are just so many that we couldn’t possibly have read any substantial amount?). I’d love to read this, so I’ll mull over the idea. I’m currently only 150 pages into a different 1,000 page book, so hmmmmm :) When are you thinking you’d start it?

I was thinking of starting in the new year…sometime in January. I am in the middle of like three books that I don’t seem to be making any progress on. I figure I can figure out how to read 100 or so pages a month…
