Little B’s First Ear Infection

Our nice relaxing weekend (blog post coming soon) was interrupted Sunday night with a loud cough coming from the crib in Belén’s room.  She has had a bit of a cold so it wasn’t entirely unexpected, but it sounded kind of loud and there were two in a row, so I decided to peek in and check on her.

I opened the door to a frightful scene where our sleepy, out-of-it baby along with her Soothe & Glow Seahorse, crib and sheets were covered in chunky quinoa laden vomit.  Ugh…the poor thing.  My stomach immediately twisted into knots worrying about our baby.  Not really knowing where to start with the clean up, I grabbed the baby and started stripping her out of her vomit-covered sleep sac and jammies while Andy started in on the crib.  My parents had been over for dinner so they helped as well by offering to go to the store and get some PediaLyte (aka, Baby Gatorade) to prevent dehydration in case she couldn’t keep anything down.

The scene migrated from horrific to under control in minutes.  Belén was clearly tired so we decided to set up her Pack ‘n Play in our bedroom so we would be right there if she were to become explosive again or become progressively more sick.  Andy placed her in her crib on her back and she tossed and turned.  He decided to roll her over on her stomach both because it is clearly her preferred position (she always turns onto her stomach now that she is able) and because we figured if she threw up, it would be better if she was face down.  She immediately fell asleep and slept clear until 4:30 AM when she woke up famished.

After a big feeding which she ended up keeping down, she slept in until 8 AM and we concluded she was more or less better and decided to take her to my mom’s while we went to our Valentine’s Day spa appointment.

When we picked her up a few hours later, she clearly wasn’t herself still but we figured she was just fighting off whatever bug had invaded her body.  She let us know how not-herself she was still feeling by a second and third projectile vomit right when we walked in the front door of our home.

This time around, I put her into the bath while Andy cleaned up.  Afterwards, Andy dressed her in her jammies and I decided to call the doctor to make sure we were doing the right things for our sick girl.  Meanwhile, we gave her a bit of the PediLyte.

After a few minutes on hold, I was able to talk with a nurse.  I described the puke sessions and she agreed that what we were doing was correct and recommended we give her a teaspoon of PediaLyte every ten minutes and if she was keeping that down to start her back on her normal diet.  When I elaborated that she has had a cold and her left eye has been plagued with goobers all weekend, the nurse backtracked on her recommendation and said we better bring her in because vomiting can be a symptom of an ear infection.

We scheduled an appointment for 45 minutes later at which time we found out from a substitute doctor that Belén did, in fact, have an ear infection…her first, in fact.  Good call nurse!

We immediately started her on amoxicillin (in the parking lot, in fact) and so far (cross our fingers) she has kept the medicine down.  This is great news since the alternative is injections.

Nothing takes you back to your childhood like amoxicillin

Throughout the ordeal, Little B has been a great sport.  It is quite clear she is not feeling well as her eyes do not sparkle like they normally do, her wiggliness has subsided, her appetite is diminished and she does not seem her normal happy-go-lucky self.  We really hope the drugs kick in and she is back to her normal self soon.  I am sure this is one of many ear infections, but if we had it our way, it would be the only one as it is so hard to watch our little girl suffer.

Here’s hoping a good night sleep coupled with some drugs will bring a healthy baby in the morning.
