A Visit From Auntie

This is a TMI post.  In case you are new to the blog, the rules are that if you don’t want to learn the gory details of pregnancy, breastfeeding, periods, etc., stop reading now.  Otherwise, here we go.

I had a feeling she was coming.  The mini cramps, the two small zits, the smell of face grease on a day which I had showered…something was not quite normal…or at least not normal in my postpartum life.

On our last super long training run, the mini cramps in my abdomen caused me to ask Anna and Erin to remind me what it felt like to have a period.  It had been since July of 2008 so a heck of a long time.  I thought I remembered but I wasn’t 100% sure.

I am now only breastfeeding in the morning when Belén wakes up and in evening before she goes to bed, so it would make sense that Auntie Flo would have packed her bags for a trip after such a long exhile.

Therefore, it was of little surprise when she arrived at my doorstep while we were in Sun Valley last weekend.   This first trip back has been more of a weekend visit for Aunt Flo rather than a full blown trip.  She is easing me back into her presence.

While I do not look forward to my monthly visits from her recommencing, the symbolism of what this means is significant!  I can barely fathom that I almost have my body back to myself after intimately sharing it with our daughter for a year and ten months.  This is going to be a nice change back to a one-time status quo.
