Foodies on Twitter

I was embarrassed to admit it for awhile, but I really enjoy Twitter.  I am sort of over Facebook mostly because I never got into Farmville or the other applications.  I still check in usually once a day to see what people are up to and to promote the blog, but I don’t follow every post like I used to and often do with Twitter.

For those of you who are not familiar with how Twitter works, it is sort of like Facebook in that you post a status, but the difference is that it has to be 140 characters or less.  These status messages are called tweets.  The tweets cannot contain anything but characters so if you want to post a picture, you post it somewhere else and then add the link to the tweet.  It is sort of like a low maintenance version of Facebook.

Besides posting, the only other things you do are read the tweets of the people you follow and then if you would like to agree or promote their tweet, you can retweet it (RT) or you can reply to a person.  The only other thing to mention is that Twitter usernames start with an @ symbol, so for example, my twitter name is @adventuregirl77.

I follow a wide range of people on Twitter from Lance Armstrong to Ann Curry to my sister to the CEO of Zappos.com to friends, gourmet chefs, bakers, etc.  So in a single dose of information, I can find out about all sorts of things that are happening in the world and I almost always know about a news event before I hear about it on the radio or read about it online.  Twitter is awesome for news junkies.

Another thing I really like about Twitter is you can receive awesome advice.  I generally lack in the cooking department, so I find it so thrilling that when I have a question related to cooking, I can post it to Twitter and I often receive almost instantaneous, amazing advice on how to spice up  my meal.

Case in point.  A few weeks back, I had chicken thighs I needed to use up before they went bad, but I couldn’t find anything on allrecipes that sounded really good with them.  I posted the following to Twitter:

chicken thighs1With in a few minutes, I had responses back from two amazing gourmet chefs, Sara (@skeddy77) and Linda (@SaltySeattle):

chicken thighs(the @adventuregirll77 at the beginning of the posts signifies that this is a reply to one of my posts.)

I chose Linda’s suggestion partially because I did not have any Dijon mustard and the chicken turned out fabulous.

Last Saturday night, I used Twitter again to find out how to spice up my fruit salad we were taking to my parents house for dinner and @skeddy77 came through again.

fruitsaladThe honey and cinnamon was a very nice touch.

I promise not to take too much advantage of my foodie friends on Twitter because I know they are busy creating fabulous meals to eat and blog about at www.blahtota-daa.blogspot.com and www.saltyseattle.com .  But it sure is nice having access to some of the culinary elite and I thank Twitter for making this possible.

Thanks for the great recipes. I’ve never got involved on Twitter because worried about the time synch as can easily spend too much time on Facebook! ;-)
