My sister purchased a pair of Rainbow flip flops a few years back and I remember her agonizing how brutal they were to wear while she broke them in. Ever since she finished with the breaking in process she has raved about how comfortable the flip flops are to the point where I almost wanted a pair.
Fast forward to when we were in Santa Cruz. Inside one of the copious surf shops carrying the sandals, I grilled Anna on how painful the break in process was. I believe her quote was, “just wear them until you have sores and then the minute the sores heal, wear them again.” Wow! If that is not foreboding pain, I don’t know what is and I already have notoriously sensitive feet.
After some hemming and hawing, I finally convinced myself the end result of the wonderful arch support justified the pain to break them in and sprung for the expensive flip flops. Anna warned me about wearing them too far from home without back up sandals but I ignored the warnings and wore them on our trip to the amusement park to take photos. I don’t know if Rainbow has changed the design or what, but they gave me ZERO problems and they were super comfortable from the get go. It is probably worth mentioning this is only a day after running our 50K so my feet were already quite sensitive.
I have continued to wear them and my only complaint is my ugly toenails desperately in need of a pedicure. Rainbow flip flops are comfortable AND supportive…usually an oxymoron for flip flops. Another great perk is that they are “green” since you can wear them forever, which is also easy on your pocketbook in the long-term.
Contrary to their name, Rainbows come in very plain, sensible colors, namely brown, black and grey. I chose the grey color.
Rainbows are my recommendation for the 2010 (through 2020) flip flop season(s).
