It is grocery day for much of America. Andy typically does our grocery shopping but he has been out of town this weekend so the chore falls on my shoulders. I actually don’t mind grocery shopping, it’s just that it takes me a lot longer than it does Andy and I spend a lot more money. So it is both fiscally and time prudent if Andy is our shopper.
Belén and I had to run to the store last night because our Infant Tylenol and Motrin were recalled and Belén had a fever. While we were there we picked up a few other necessities which got us through today and could probably get us through another two days or more if I didn’t serve fresh food, but what is the fun in that? I find that feeding someone besides Andy and myself, and a growing, developing someone at that, I feel more inclined to ensure she is getting all of her food groups, protein, carbs, Vitamin C, calcium…basically a well-rounded meal.
I have the meal plan for the week all made and my grocery list in my purse but the timing of B’s naps and my workout, etc. is making the prospect of making it to the grocery store before we go to Nana and Grandpa’s for dinner slim. Anyway, so this got me thinking.
What THREE items most often send you to the store?
You know…the items that if you are out of, you can only go a little while without.
When I look at our answers which I will get to in a second, I realize they have changed a lot over the years. When we used to have our meals delivered when we were first married, it would have likely been breakfast items like oatmeal or bread of beverages such as milk. Certainly when I was breastfeeding it would have been milk storage bags and then when Belén first started eating solids, things like avocados and bananas would have done the trick.
If we didn’t have the Boise Milk service where our milk, bread, yogurt, eggs and salsa are delivered to our doorstep once a week, any of those items could be one of the three items that would send us to the store. There are a few necessity items like toilet paper, tampons, shampoo, garbage bags, dishwasher soap, tooth paste which will certainly do it, but we generally buy those in bulk from Costco ahead of time, so they aren’t often the catalyst.
As it sits, I would have to say these three items would currently be most likely to send us to the store:

1. Fruit – Especially since I was pregnant and now with a growing girl, we consume a lot of fruit and seemingly constantly need to refresh the fruit bowl

2. La Croix mineral water, lemon or lime-flavored – Or as our family so delicately refers to it “La Crotch.” No sodium, No calories, it’s fizzy water that makes drinking water fun. Both Andy and I are addicted to it, as is his family and my sister buy it as well. We go through cases of La Crotch a week. I only wish we could have it delivered because it takes up so much of my grocery carrying maximum poundage. As a side note, when I was looking for this picture, I saw some woman had bought it at Costco, but we have never seen it there. Has anyone else seen it in the Boise Costco? Goodness, that would be wonderful!

3. Cat or Dog Food – The pets gotta eat too and it always seems to be a last minute buy for some reason. And since I posted a picture, I should make a mention of this dog food. Anyone who knows me well knows how stressed out I have been about our dog, Sassy’s artritis and fatty lumps over the years. The lumps are still there but I decided to stop worrying about them after they tested negative for cancer. The arthritis is still there as well but after about six months on this food, she is like an entirely new dog! She most definitely has a renewed spring in her step that was entirely gone before this food. Andy was even thinking we were going to have to put her down before Belén was born.
(Not a good discussion to have with a pregnant woman!) Treasure Valley residents can find the dog food at a most unlikely place, Idaho Mountain Touring.
Honorable Mention: Yo-Baby yogurt (Belén’s yogurt), Canadian bacon, sandwich meat, string cheese (We likely wouldn’t make a trip just for these items.)
I am really curious what three items send you to the store most often? I have a sneaky feeling nobody’s list is the same as mine.
Happy Grocery Shopping!

Canned tomatoes and bananas.
We go through bananas really fast. It’s the only fruit that everyone seems to eat. And I use canned tomatoes for everything. Chili, pizza, enchiladas, spaghetti, Indian food, etc…
Jerry and I have a pact. The divorce lawyer would be callled if we ever ran out of heavy cream for me and refried beans for him. So those never make us go to the store cuz we always have tons on hand at all times.
It’s funny how this varies for everyone.
Besides the obvious milk and eggs, our top 3 are:
1. Peanut Butter
2. Fruit
3. Orange juice
Our list varies a bit, depending on the season. It usually includes: 1. skim milk, 2. Peanut Butter, 3. fruit (bananas, apples, grapes), and I better not forget dark chocolate…
