Saturday I went to see the movie “Sex and the City 2″ with three of my friends. I had heard the reviews were fairly negative and I don’t necessarily agree with them so I have decided to branch out into the movie reviewer realm and share my thoughts about the movie with you.
In case you are short on time, I will cut right to the chase…if you liked the TV show and the first movie, you will like the second movie. For more detail, read on…
From the opening credits to the closing curtain the movie is filled with glitz and glamor. But would you really expect anything less from that which is “Sex and the City”? Sassy, exotic and sometimes outrageous outfits coupled with accessories to match make the show worth seeing alone. Not that I would ever even consider wearing 80% of their ensembles, it is nevertheless like a candy store full of colorful calories that dazzle my eyes even though I know I will still end up with dark chocolate almond bark when a decision point is necessary.
In the movie due to a business trip of Samantha’s, the girls (Samantha, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte) find themselves in the most unlikely of worldwide locales, the United Arab Emirates, specifically Abu Dhabi. Having been to the UAE myself (Dubai in 2008), it was no surprise to me that the movie filming actually took place in Morocco since the show was “too sexy” for the Arab world. Their clothing, behavior, conversation, attitudes, pretty much everything about them does not fit in the Arab world depicted in the movie.
Other reviews I read negatively pointed out that the depiction of the Middle East does not go an inch beyond stereotypes. While I agree with the assessment and that a more accurate depiction would be entirely interesting, I don’t know that a move with “sex and the city” in the name is the right movie to broach this subject.
The girl’s personality traits remain true to the series where in my opinion, they are all amplified by a degree of magnitude from anyone I know in real life. I know a Carrie, a Miranda, a Samantha and multiple Charlotte’s but the personality traits of “normal life” versions of these women are much less extreme.
Even married, Carrie obsesses and over analyzes her relationship with men (Big and yes! Aiden is back for awhile).
Even married with kids AND A NANNY, Charlotte still struggles to live up to the idyllic perfection she continually strives for. She even laments that she has no idea how us normal women do it without “help.”
In her sexually flamboyant fashion, Samantha takes her sexual escapades through a new adventure called menopause.
And finally Miranda has her typical Type A disposition even while traveling by becoming a tour guide and cat herder on steroids.
If I am going to be honest with you, the movie is pretty over the top and cheesy, but more of a “New Moon” over the top and cheesy than a “Miss Congeniality 2″ over the top and cheesy. As my sister would say, it is wonderfully “cheestastic” and a must see with the caveat that you need to go with your girlfriends. This is not one you want to subject your man friends to even if they owe you big. You will owe them even bigger by the time the movie is out.
I won’t give away too much since many of the ladies out there may want to see it, but all and all, (for me) it was entertaining and fun. I usually get bored during movies over an hour and a half long and this movie kept me entertained for well over two hours. And yes it was long and should have been edited a bit more, but I look at it like a good haircut in China, more entertainment for your money.
Happy Ladies Night (or Afternoon) Out!

Not a big fan, however I did go on the “Sex and the City” bus tour in NYC a couple of years ago and had a great time. It was my first introduction to Magnolias Bakery which was worth the whole trip. Glad to hear you enjoyed the movie.
