I am really starting to forget so much Mandarin. The Spanish is mostly with me to stay but the Mandarin is in a mass exodus out of my brain.
Xǔduō Diànnǎo, written in Pinyin (the kind of Mandarin you can sound out) and pronounced “shoe-do-o dee-an-ow” or 许多电脑 (Simplified Chinese) means “many computers.” Diànnǎo is made from two words, diàn = electricity and nǎo = brain. Makes sense huh? Mandarin is a very logical language, that is why I like it.
Anyway to my point, xǔduō diànnǎo…we have many computers!
We didn’t really intend for this to happen but at the current moment on a given night we may have five computers in the house, not counting our two smart phones. If you count the Smart Phones because they really are computers in their own right we have SIX computers.
Now I am not bragging. This is really quite ridiculous. And before you email me and say, “um, ya, so I could really use one of your computers” please let me explain.
Oh wait, before I do I just realized we have one more. SEVEN!
I will go in the order in which we bought or acquired them.
Computer #1: iMac – My first Mac. We purchased it right after I almost had a nervous breakdown after working 60 hour weeks and completing my MBA at the same time in 2006. By buying a Mac, I was making a consious decision to work on “fun life things” rather than “work things.” We also thought it would be a good thing to bring to China with us as we were moving to Shanghai a month later. This is the computer that I started really blogging on as iLife (at the time) made it so easy.
Computer #2: Alecia’s iPhone – Miiiieee Prrrrreeeecious….
Computer #3: Alecia’s work laptop (HP PC)- Unfortunately comes home most nights.
Computer #4: HP laptop running Windows 7 – My Christmas present because the iMac was acting up and I was getting pissed at it way too often, plus I wanted to make this blogging thing a more common occurance.
Computer #5: Andy’s work computer (Newer HP PC) – Also comes home most nights.
Computer #6: Home Server – Where everything backs up. This is the one I forgot about because it does not have a monitor. This device in turn gets backed up on amazon.com so we have an offsite back up. Before you think we completely have our digital media storage process shit together let me just say that we don’t fully and this is actually something I intend to work on in the coming weeks. What a complicated process! If some company (like say the one we work for) could solve this in the consumer space, CHA-CHING baby!
Computer #7: Andy’s Droid phone

Ya so, if you are ever wondering what your webpage looks like on Chrome, IE, Safari, Firefox or pondering the differences between Windows Vista, Windows 7, iOS, Droid OS, Mac OS X Snow Leopard or plain old Mac OS X, give us a hollar. I can likely find out in our random, ad hoc, personal, hodgepodge, melting pot home computer network where we do not discriminate against operating systems or platforms (although Andy is snooty towards Apple and I have been known to give some jabs to the Droid.)
And tonight we have two guest computers bringing the number to NINE, which is really so over the top. Maybe we should get rid of our HP laptop of iMac. Do you know anyone who is in the market?
Anyway, so I guess this answers the question of what happens when two Computer Science majors get married.
