Born Again Hobie Cat

Andy’s uncle gave him his old 1975 Hobie Cat catamaran which he had not used since the mid-90s.  It was not in very good shape when Andy received it and I wondered if it would become a permanent fixture behind our garage like those country homes with old clunkers littered about their property.

Being that he received the boat when I was pregnant and we had just moved back from China, I wondered when he would ever have the time to restore the catamaran (and if he knew how to restore it.)

Here is a picture of Andy and the boat when he received it.

Little by little, Andy started making progress on the boat.  When he had a spare 30 minutes here or an extra 20 minutes there, he would disappear behind the garage for awhile and come back inside with metal shavings on his shirt or sweat on his brow.  About six months ago, boxes started arriving at our doorstep periodically with Andy’s name on them.  I quickly learned that they contained little pieces of boat necessities and stopped questioning what was in the boxes.

A couple of weeks ago, Andy had the outside of the boat recoated and finally after a year and a half, it was ready for it’s maiden voyage as a born again Hobie Cat.

As you can see from the pictures, we went out to Lucky Peak where we met my dad who also has a boat that we planned to use to aid us if there were any problems.  After Andy and my dad rigged the boat, they put it in the water and it floated!  I could tell by the look on his face that Andy was very thrilled.  Next up, Andy sat on the trampoline and begin sailing.  Horray!

Belén and I cheered him on from my dad’s boat as Andy made his way around the west end of the reservoir.  We are very proud of the boat he has rebuilt and I believe this takes us one step closer to a grand sailing adventure in the future.  Details TBD.

Way to go Andy!
