Mennonite Pies

Here’s a tip (and a huge generalization).  If you are at a Farmer’s Market and there happens to be a stand with Mennonite women selling pies, BUY TWO.  If anyone has pie-making down, it is the Mennonites, at least in our community.  Maybe instead of serving coffee and donuts after church they serve pie and tea…or maybe pie making is something they teach women in the Mennonite version of Sunday school…or maybe I should just be quiet since I really know nothing about the Mennonite religion and my only exposure to Mennonites has been at the pie stand and once when driving to McCall and the driver of a minivan fell asleep and drove off the road in front of us.  We stopped to make sure everyone was okay and all of the passengers in the van were wearing the little hats on their head which led me to believe they were Mennonites.  Yes, I should definitely be quiet.

But back to the pies, at the Boise Saturday Market, I highly recommend the marionberry with strawberry rhubarb as a runner up!  They are super fabulous!

The table is not exactly a pillar of a sophisticated hostess, but the food was pretty darn good and the pies topped it all off.

Note only the strawberry rhubarb is shown because the marionberry disappeared before I could grab the camera.  It is hard to tell but that whole in the center was actually a heart left by the baker.  What a nice touch!

If you are looking for a treat this summer, I am telling you…pies made by Mennonite ladies!  Get there early though because they go fast!

I made a couple of pies from scratch recently and they were delicious (so domestic of me right?). I am not ready to compete with the Mennonites yet, but maybe with another 20 years of practice…

I agree, they were yummy – and homemade always tastes so much better! Now I’m hungry for more pie! ;-)
