The votes have been tallied and the ruling is universal, I am obsessed with protein. It was first brought to my attention about a month ago when my (old) boss said he would bring in breakfast for an all day meeting. Happy to have one less thing to prepare in the morning but against my better judgment, I did not eat at home so when I arrived in the meeting room and saw the lack of food spread consisting of only fruit, bagels and cream cheese, I know I looked disgusted. Before I even intended to, I said out loud, “Is this it?” My boss (at the time) responded with something like “Is there a problem?”
I proceeded to explain to the entire room that I needed to have protein in my breakfast or else I would be starving by 10:30 am and this spread was not offering any protein…oh and you don’t want to see me hungry, especially while discussing the topic on the agenda for the day. Hello, oversharing in a business setting.
After this I came to recognize how important protein is in my life. I brought the conversation up with Andy that night. He quickly responded that I am obsessed with protein and then reminded me that I am always trying to push it on Belén as well which is true but for good reason. The kid does not gravitate towards anything loaded with protein with chili being the one exception. I cannot tell you the number of egg whites I have prepared for her only to be tossed aside after two bites. I am just trying to make sure she gets enough protein a day. The doctor said it only takes one egg, so it would really be so easy if she liked eggs, but alas, that would be too easy!
What can I say, whether it is for me or Belén, I am obsessed with protein! My breakfast is either peanut butter (protein) on toast, 2 eggs (protein) with 2 slices of Canadian bacon (protein) or a protein shake. And my go to lunch at work in the cafeteria.
Note the chickpeas, kidney beans and egg on top (all protein) and lately I have been adding grilled chicken as well.
The evidence is so overwhelming that I think it is time for me to come out of the closet with my protein obsession. It really only exists because I know without protein, I will eat thousands more calories a day due to constant hunger. I feel like protein makes food stick longer and prevents me from constantly snacking. I think the obsession started with the South Beach Diet years ago and then was revived when I was pregnant worrying that I was going to pass out from lack of protein in the mornings.
I guess now the obsession is here to stay…but is that really such a bad thing?

You should read the vegan book – The China Study. Then you might think it’s a bad thing. Pretty amazing book.

No, just animal proteins.

I am the exact same way. My digestive system will not function properly without a protein-heavy diet. It’s hard to find good breakfast type stuff that is heavier in protein too. I find myself struggling in that department sometimes when looking for variety. Peanut butter sandwiches with wheat bread seems to hold me over the longest.

I think that’s a pretty healthy obsession. Just be happy that you aren’t obsessed with doughnuts! =) I always eat the same 2 things for breakfast, yogurt and oatmeal. I need to get more creative.

I agree with Sara that this is a good obsession. But am also interested in the book that Jen refers to… need to do some further research.
