Belén is the type of girl that often does not like things the first time she tries them but then warms up to them after a few more iterations of exposure. This was the case with teeth brushing…the first ten times we brushed her teeth you would have thought we were dipping Cankelonia (her doll with cankles <<whose original name was Hillary>>) in a vat of acid. But then she got over it and now loves having her teeth brushed each night as long as we use the “good” toothpaste.
She hated baths for months. Now she adores them and screams when she has to get out.
She refused to talk for way too long. Now she babbles and imitates everything we say and even whipped out the word “Yuck!” after trying pulled pork last night. We are blaming that one on daycare.
She hated the ocean (and sand) the first two days we were in Mexico but by day three she went running towards it and squealed with delight with each wave.
My friend Michelle gave me a couple of Baby Bjorn potty seats awhile back so last night, we decided to start the familiarization process to them.
In short, it did not go well. She seems very freaked out to be sitting on a toilet which surprises me a bit because she is such a little imitator I thought she might like to mimic mommy and daddy on this one. Not so. I think she may feel like she is going to fall in or something because her response seems to be that of a feeling of out of control…even though we are holding her.
So we will keep putting her on there until it begins to become less scary. From an American perspective, it is perhaps a bit too early to start thinking about potty training but I see no reason not to at least start getting her thinking about it. Besides, she despises when we change her diapers these days. I think she just hates pausing play time to lay down for even two minutes, so I am simultaneously trying to reason with her telling her we can forego the laying down each day if she wants to move on to the toilet.
We will see. In the meantime, I am curious if you have any potty training tips of your own AND at what age you started.

I’ve had a couple friends tell us that they trained their little ones by letting them run around diaper-less on a week long river trip. Sounds bizarre but a cool story.

It reminds me I also need to buy a potty chair for my son. He shows signs for bowel movement by some sound “en…en”, but not for urine. Now it’s summer in Shanghai and it’s very hot. So he seldom uses diaper now. We just let him pee everywhere and I will do the cleaning afterwards. Sounds horrible? It’s better than diaper rash for me.
