38.5 Weeks Pregnant – Lightning

Weight Gain: 38 lbs

Feeling: My belly sits on my lap and my legs actually nudge it when I am climbing stairs.  Need I say more?

Baby: Babycenter says 6.8 lbs, 19 1/2  inches long but last Friday’s ultrasound estimated 6 lbs. 7 oz.

Believe it or not, I am tired of talking about pregnancy.  I want to talk about birth dammit.  I am so over this pregnancy thing.  I really feel like it is getting close, yet could still be days away.  I lost my mucus plug.  I have had tightening of my abdomen which doesn’t feel like what I thought  contractions would feel like so it’s hard to say if that is what it was.  As my Hypnobirthing teacher would say, I think my uterus is getting ready for birth.  Tomorrow morning the doctor will strip my membranes so perhaps that will speed things along even further.  I am very interested to see my dilation stats as well!

We are really excited to have this baby and pretty much ready.  The To Do lists have most everything checked off.  Still plenty to do at work, but I have realized there is no natural, good stopping point.  My last day is Friday even if I don’t go into labor by the end of the weekend.

I think I have experienced lightning or the baby dropping.  My workout Tuesday morning felt easier from a lung capacity perspective.   I also can eat a bit more which really isn’t a good thing.

The skin on my stomach that has been stretching so dramatically has suddenly chilled out a bit too.  My doctor did mention that based on the blood vessels that have burst, he expects me to have a hernia when this is all said and done, which will need to be repaired.  Lovely.

I have moved on to only comfortable clothes.  Interestingly enough, pretty much all of the pants and skirts I am wearing are non-maternity…just my baggier normal clothes hiked down below my belly.  I no longer care about being a cute pregnant lady as evidenced by yesterday’s outfit below.

Time has passed since I originally started this post.  On my drive out to Eagle for investment club I realized that the tightening I have been experiencing probably are contractions.  I recall my doctor saying some time ago that the firmness of a belly having a contraction feels like you are touching your forehead whereas a belly not having a contraction is more like the firmness of your lips.  This is pretty accurate although I think a better comparison for the contraction is to a hard penis.  The contractions(?) do not hurt yet, but I suppose if these really are contractions, that will come with time.

A couple of other things I notice is a really sensitive scalp which usually lets me know hormones are a-ragin’ and a need to use the bathroom a lot.  I think my body wants the waste out of my system quickly…another sign labor could be imminent.

There is a good possibility that my birth story started today and it started with donuts.  More on that later so stay tuned.  Tomorrow should be exciting…or maybe just more waiting.

The phrase “striping membranes” makes me uncomfortable. I can’t even imagine what that entalls and I’m too big of a chicken to look it up. I hope it goes well and kick starts active labor for you. This is such an exciting time!
