I bought a Groupon back in November for hard cover photo books from Snapfish. It turns out they expire in early February and that fact has been nagging on me for weeks to get my photos organized and pull the photo books together before the Groupon expires.
My intention was to create a photo book for each year of each child’s life so I purchased four books, three through snapfish (the max on that particular Groupon) and one through Shutterfly. Three years ago I was a much more organized photographer and blogger and my organizational ways have lapsed a bit as of late, so I thought it would be no problem to knock out the first book, “Belén 0 – 12 months.”
It was, until I realized a few key photos were missing, her birth (kind of a big deal), her first Halloween photos and her first photos with Santa. I stayed calm, downloaded low-res versions from the blog but it just wasn’t going to do, then I panicked!
Where were these important photos? If they were missing, what other photos were missing? I MUST GET ORGANIZED! And that is the mode I have been in since I recovered from my respiratory flu which incidentally knocked me out hard for four full days and forced me to think about nothing else but watching sixteen episodes of “Friday Night Lights” and taking one breath at a time. Since the minute I was a functioning human being again, I have been all about photos.
I asked Andy to look for the missing photos and simultaneously called my mom and begged her to upload her version of the Halloween and Santa photos to a shared folder on Dropbox. Like a champ, Andy delivered our long lost Dell computer from the garage and hooked it up just long enough to copy over all of the photos on that device. We have no idea why they were missing but voila, they were suddenly back and I am in photo organization mode once again.
I now have a system. It’s not perfect, which to me would be totally automated, but otherwise it is a good system. I posted a status update on Facebook asking others if they were interested in knowing my system. They/you are, so I will share my system over the coming weeks. I thought it was going to be a single post, but as I get into it, I realize it may make sense to break it up into parts. This is Part Zero. Once I finish the last two photo books and beat the Groupon expiration dates, I will post parts I and II.
That said, if you have any particular questions or topic you want me to cover, leave a comment and I will make sure to address it. With that, I will leave you with reason number one to go through your photos. You come across hundreds of gems just like this one that make you realize how fast time flies while simultaneously putting a huge smile on your face.
Your homework before the coming posts is to think about what you want to do with your photos once they are organized? Do you simply want to look at them from time-to-time? Do you need to find a particular photo quickly? Do you want to make a video of the memorable photos from each year? Do you want to create photo books or yearly calendars? What you want to do with your photos will play into how you organize them, so spend some time thinking about it.
